Multiple books or booklets arranged in a pattern. The front cover has a white background with a yellow gradient at the top and black text that reads 'Everywhere is ordinary: Milan'. The back cover features a photograph of a train station platform with overhead wires and a building, set against a blue sky, with some orange and yellow hues at the bottom. The covers also include additional text about photography and notes by Alaw Evans, with dates and other details.

Project overview

For this photography brief, I travelled to Milan, aiming to capture the city's essence through a lens that focused on its everyday life rather than its iconic landmarks. Inspired by the idea of uncovering the beauty in the mundane, I sought to showcase Milan's culture through candid snapshots and street photography. Having grown up in a tourist-town, I value exploring places and viewing familiar surroundings from both an insider’s outsider's lens. My photo book serves as a visual narrative, inviting viewers to explore the ordinary moments that make Milan extraordinary, challenging conventional perceptions of beauty and inviting a fresh perspective on urban Italian life.

This project was an open brief, with the only requirement being to create images and display them in any physical way. While exploring studio photography, street photography, and still life, I discovered that street photography resonated with me the most, as it allowed me to capture real people and explore new places.

Images were captured with a Canon EOS 1200D and a cheap film camera, using both colour and black and white film
